Renaming files is the process of changing the identifier of a digital file while preserving its internal data. It allows you to clean up poorly structured downloads, enforce a strict file structure, or mask sensitive information.

Depending on your Operating System (OS) and the number of files you need to modify, you can use built-in tools, command-line scripts, or dedicated bulk-renaming software. Standard Renaming (Single File)

The easiest way to rename an individual file relies on your operating system’s built-in file manager:

Windows: Select the file and press F2, or right-click and choose the Rename icon/option. Type the new name and press Enter.

macOS: Click the file once to highlight it and press the Return key. Enter the new name and press Return again.

Mobile (Android/iOS): Open your file manager (like Files by Google), tap the three-dot options menu next to the file, select Rename, and save your changes. Native Bulk Renaming (Multiple Files)

If you have multiple files that need to follow a simple sequential layout, you do not need third-party tools.

The Windows Select-All Trick: Highlight all the files you want to change (by dragging or pressing Ctrl + A). Right-click the very first file in your sequence and click Rename. Type a generic name like Vacation and hit Enter. Windows will automatically structure the remaining files as Vacation (1), Vacation (2), etc. Note: Always make sure the first file in your list is the one you right-click, or the numbered sequence might order itself incorrectly.

macOS Finder Finder Items: Highlight multiple files, hold Control and click one of them, then choose Rename. A pop-up will appear allowing you to replace specific text strings, append text prefixes/suffixes, or format them into numbered structures. Advanced and Developer Tools

When handling intricate structures (like changing text case, stripping out spaces, or modifying extensions in batch), built-in GUI shortcuts fall short. Windows: Mass Rename Files In Order – In Seconds!
